Hello there! You’ve found the first episode of the Nonprofit Coffee Break. Getting everything started in this episode we lay down some key terms, talk about what really makes a nonprofit. Then give an overview of revenue in a nonprofit.
If you liked what you heard, please let us know. This format has the potential to be exciting! Help us get the ball rolling by subscribing and telling your friends & peers.
Nonprofit, Charity, and Nongovernmental Organization have been outlines in the Glossary of Nonprofit Terms.
The definitions were constructed based on various dictionaries and wikipedia.
Shareholders & Public Good
Not a lot to add here that wasn’t covered in the episode. There are new public benefit corporations (not B-Corp, that is something different) that are attempting to give forprofits a way to put a very specific good above their fiduciary requirement. Minnesota just added this in January 2015. It is an interesting topic but not all that relevant to nonprofits – unless you’d like to hear more about it.
I completely blanked on mentioning the ways that Government gets involved in funding organizations. There are many nonprofits that receive funding (in part or full) this way. It still likely falls under the donations branch of revenue. A lot of this section was simplified for the sake of time and clarity.
I know why you are really here though…
